Life in Hawthorn Class

Term 5 has been a very quick but exciting one in Year 2!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the continent of ‘Antarctica’ this term. We started the term learning about Sir Ernest Shackleton who was a famous explorer and led the Endurance expedition to Antarctica. We have written a wonderful diary entry from his point of view, telling the story of his incredible survival skills and optimism. Then we began focussing on writing newspaper reports about Miss Topham’s disastrous trip to Antarctica where she got stuck in the ice!

As well as doing lots of fantastic writing about Antarctica, the children have also been taught about the geography of the different polar regions and the effects of global warming. They have made posters to warn against the effects of global warming, and we are sure we have some future planet-savers amongst us!

We have also been enjoying lots of hands-on learning, such as sculpting clay penguin models in Art, continuing to improve our recorder skills and using Chrome Music Lab in our Computing lessons to create our own music online.

This term, we also celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The children were able to create their own bunting, which decorated the playground and classrooms ahead of our celebrations! On VE Day, we all dressed up in our best party clothes or 1940s clothes and were treated to an inspiring talk from Hilary, as well a special VE Day themed history lesson where children created posters to show off all their knowledge about the special celebration! Thank you to everyone for all the effort they put in to make this event so special, I’m sure it is one we will never forget!

At the end of term, we worked together with the children in Year 6 who have also been studying the topic of Antarctica this term. They loved being able to show off their work and learn some tips and tricks from the Year 6 pros!

We hope you have an amazing half term and we are all looking forward to seeing you in Term 6 to start our new topic ‘The Great Fire of London’!
