Year 5

Cedar and Willow

It has been another busy and reflective term in Year 5 as we explored the key events from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s in both the UK and the USA. This topic has linked brilliantly with our whole school values, particularly this terms value of respect, and has encouraged us to think deeply about the kind of world we want to help create. In History, we have been researching the significance of influential figures and events, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Windrush Movement, as well as Martin Luther King Jr. and his iconic “I have a dream…” speech. This has been a powerful topic for developing everyone’s understanding of individual rights and freedom, and the importance of challenging discrimination in society.

In English, we have been working hard practising the Year 5 standards through a variety of different genres. The children began by exploring and then writing their own play scripts based on ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. We came together as year group to hear some brilliant writing and we saw some amazing acting skills too! We have finished the term by writing our own biographies about Floella Benjamin- another influential individual we have been learning about through our topic book this term ‘Coming to England’.

As part of Science Week’s theme of ‘Curiosity’, the children were given the mission of designing and making a craft with a parachute that would protect an egg inside of it when dropped from a height. The children had lots of fun and worked brilliantly together to bring their designs to life – with mixed results for the eggs! 

We are again so proud of how far the children have come this year! The positive engagement and resilience we are seeing in Year 5 are so rewarding for us all. Keep up the great work Year 5!
