The Grove Primary School

Year 1

Larch and Silver Birch

This term in Year 1, we have been diving deep into our learning through our exciting topic, ‘Commotion in the Ocean’!

In English, we rewrote the story of ‘Tiddler’ in our own words before creating brand new adventures for him—he certainly found himself in lots of tricky situations! We also enjoyed reading ‘The Secret of Black Rock’, which introduced us to a range of rich and exciting vocabulary that we then used in our own writing.

In Maths, we have been working hard to partition two-digit numbers into tens and ones. The children practised this using Dienes equipment and place value boards, helping to build their confidence and understanding. We also explored different ways of measuring, including length, height, weight and mass, through practical, hands-on activities.

In Reading, the children have thoroughly enjoyed our Talk Through Stories sessions. It has been wonderful to see them joining in enthusiastically with actions and reading along with increasing confidence. We are especially pleased to see the children using the rich vocabulary from these sessions not only in their writing but also in their everyday conversations.

In Science, our focus has been on the human body and our senses. The children particularly enjoyed going on a sensory walk around the school, using their sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste to explore the world around them.

We have continued to develop our independence through our Continuous Provision. From creating beautiful crafts to completing challenges—and even leading their own Sounds Write sessions—the children have truly impressed us with their enthusiasm and growing confidence in their learning.

In Art and Design, we explored the work of Henri Matisse and created our own under-the-sea collages inspired by his style. We also studied seascapes by a range of artists and produced our own paintings using poster paints, experimenting with colour mixing to create different tints and shades of blue.

We ended the term with a fantastic trip to Trowbridge Museum. The children walked sensibly and safely, receiving compliments from members of the public on their exemplary behaviour. At the museum, they listened carefully and showed great respect as they explored and played with real toys from the past. It was a wonderful experience, and every child represented themselves and the school brilliantly.

We are incredibly proud of all the progress the children have made this term.

We hope you have a wonderful Easter holiday, and we look forward to welcoming you back for Term 5!
