Year 3

Lilac and Alder

As we approach the half way point in the academic year, the children in Lilac and Alder class should look back with immense pride over the wonderful achievements they have made in such a short period of time

The New Year brought in a new term but a very familiar topic and the children have loved being able to go in more depth with the Stone Age. From creating narratives which focused on waking up in a Stone Age world to understanding how the introduction of farming changed the world around us, Year 3 have enjoyed each subject showing lots of enthusiasm.

In writing sessions, Year 3 focused on writing a diary and a narrative from the perspective of someone encountering a Stone Age boy or entering a Stone Age World. Our class book, ‘The Wild Way Home’ was the basis for both of these written pieces and we have been blown away by how they have adapted this text for their own writing and how creative they have been with this. It has been a real joy to see Year 3 pushing themselves and their writing is testament to this.

Our Stone Age topic shifted focus to the Geography of Pre-historic Britain, exploring how the introduction of farming dramatically changed our landscape. This cumulated with the children being tasked with creating their own ‘Stone Age Plate’ using a wide variety of materials to build a meal fit for a Stone Age Person. The level of ingenuity shown was incredible and the children’s plates reflected their great understanding as well as their individuality.

Moving away from the Stone Age, Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed our Computing lessons this term. The introduction (or re-introduction for some) of Scratch enabled children to create a set of increasingly complex commands for a cartoon figure to follow, often with hilarious results. We apologise if this is something that has been taken home but it’s clear that there might very well be some budding programmers amongst us.

In Art, pupils produced some stamps, experimenting with different shapes and patterns to create bold printed designs. It was wonderful to see their creativity come to life through printmaking.

Science lessons were literally lit up this term as we explored how light works. Both classes showed amazing levels of enthusiasm towards experiments focusing on understanding transparent, translucent and opaque materials by shining a torch through them; they were fascinated at the different ways they could manipulate light to create shadows of different shapes and sizes.

It has been a great term for Year 3 and we very much hope that you enjoy a much needed break. We look forward to welcoming you back for Term 4 and our Egyptian topic as well as Forest School sessions.
