Year 4

Maple and Beech

Year 4 have had a fantastic term learning all about The Iron Man! We have also been very lucky and had the additional support of Mrs Fairley in Maple class, who is completing her teaching training.

In our Writing lessons, we have written newspaper reports based on the Iron Man being spotted in Westbury White Horse. We have worked hard to include inverted commas and paragraphs within our work alongside our personal writing targets. We have also completed some independent assessments and the class team are really proud of the progress the children are making.

In Art and Design, we have been learning about the artist J. M. W. Turner. We have explored his work and discussed his use of light and colour to create atmosphere. We have also been experimenting with tints and tones in preparation for next term, when we will be creating our own ‘Ideal World’ paintings inspired by Turner’s style.

In Geography, we have been learning about global warming and the effects it is having on our world. We have explored how rising temperatures are impacting environments, including melting ice caps, rising sea levels, and changes to weather patterns. We have also discussed how these changes affect both people and wildlife around the globe. In addition, we have been learning about tourism and the impact it can have on global warming. We have also explored both the positive and negative effects of tourism.

In Maths, we have worked tirelessly to explore fractions, money, decimals and time. The children have found fractions of amounts and solved a range of problems. Across the term, bar models have been used to find answers to multistep problems. We also had great success in our OUMTC, where we achieved amazing results.

In Science, we have enjoyed celebrating Science week by asking the question “Why do we have different shaped teeth?”. We used lettuce, carrot and banana alongside a spoon, knife and fork to experiment what each different tooth’s ‘job’ is.

This term we have also worked scientifically by observing over time the effect different drinks can have on our teeth. We used three different eggs and put them inside cola, milk and water. We also had one cup with egg and vinegar. Despite our classroom smelling disgusting for a few days, the children really enjoyed observing the changes. We discovered that the vinegar removed the outer shell of the egg and the water had the least change.
