Year 4
Maple and Beech

Year 4 have had a fantastic third term, continuing to learn all about The Romans! The highlight of this term was undoubtedly our trip to The Roman Baths.
In our History lessons, we have compared chariot racing to other sports such as Motor Cross Racing! We have considered why this was popular during the Roman times. We also used the playpod to create our own aqueducts. We have learned the months of the year in Roman and used Roman numerals.
We have focused our Writing on our topic book, ‘Vita the Gladiator’. We have wrote diary entries from the viewpoint of Vita and sealed our published writing with wax stamps! We have also sequenced our trip to The Roman Baths and wrote a recount of our experience.
In Art and Design, we learned about the artist, Yinka Shonibare, and explored how he uses pattern, colour and mixed media to communicate ideas about identity and culture. We investigated his work and discussed the meaning behind his art. Inspired by his style, we created our own mixed media artwork to celebrate being a citizen of the world. We combined different materials, patterns and textures, making careful choices to represent our ideas. We evaluated our finished pieces, explaining our artistic choices and how our work was influenced by Yinka Shonibare.
In DT, we designed and made working catapults using dowelling. We created labelled diagrams to plan our designs, thinking carefully about how different parts would join and how the catapult would work. During making, we used tools safely and accurately to measure, cut and join materials. After testing our catapults, we evaluated how well they worked, identified what went well and suggested improvements we could make next time.
In Maths, we have worked on our multiplication and division skills. We have explored a range of methods and used them to solve problems. We have tried to improve our accuracy so that we can in turn improve on their practice multiplication check.
In Science, we have focused on Sound this term. The children have made string telephones and experimented with tuning forks. We have linked our Science work to our understanding of music and the key vocabulary ‘pitch’ and ‘volume’.
In French, we have been improving our speaking and working with Mrs Bennet to really master new vocabulary. During our Computing sessions, we have been using a new program called turtle academy. This online programme has allowed the children to investigate their programming curiosity. Finally, In P.E we have been super successful in both swimming and in hockey. The children’s resilience and maturity has been shown to be a real strength as we have to walk to swimming every single week.
Next term, our topic is The Iron Man. Look out for our topic web for more information about this.
